WHY WE TAKE OUR SHOES OFF and WASH OUR FEET There are many different styles of yoga, and many different types of Yoga Centers. A Gentle Way is a “health and healing place.” For 7 years we have walked into these doors, taken our shoes off, and got on our yoga mats or down to soft blankets on the floor to begin this marvelous health and healing practice. We have created a sacred space. Many people can sense of the energy of the moment they walk in. We are here to let go, relax, renew, restore, release, and re-build. We are here to strengthen, and to soften. We are here at our yoga home to balance tightness and flexibility; and to balance body, mind, breath, and spirit. A few years ago I added the washing of your feet before you step into our yoga room. This was done for several reasons. I saw students rushing into the Studio, many times late; so frantic they would sometimes even forget to take off their shoes or turn their cells phones off; bringing a trail of chaos with them into our healing space, and bringing un-cleanliness into our sacred healing room. Now, by knowing that they will need to slow down and wash their feet before setting up for class, most of our long time students arrive early, not rushing - even taking time to get to know each other before class, creating a wonderful yoga community of friends that look forward to seeing each other each week. Washing someone’s feet is a sign of respect and reverence to that person; so when a student takes the time to wash their OWN feet, it is allowing them to give to THEMSELVES the type of honor and respect they would like from others. This practice took some students a little while to get used to, but almost everyone loves it now. It keeps our Center and its props much cleaner, and it is much more fun in Gentle Yoga Classes to massage CLEAN feet! We even have a dear student that gifts us with more foot wipes each time to goes to Costco! Many blessings!
